American Rights at Work

Most workers want a decent wage, health insurance, job security and a voice on the job to help solve workplace problems when they go to work every day. The best way to win these improvements is by forming a union. Workers know this, too: Studies show the number of workers who want unions is more than three times the number of workers who belong to unions now.

But when workers try to form unions, employers routinely respond with campaigns of intimidation, coercion, misinformation—and even by firing their employees. Federal law protects workers’ freedom to form a union—in theory. In reality, when America’s workers seek a voice on the job, they struggle to maintain their basic workplace right: the freedom to join a union.

American Rights at Work, an educational and advocacy organization, is dedicated to improving the climate in which workers can exercise their rights in the workplace. ARAW, led by former Rep. David Bonior (D-Mich.), defends workers’ rights and exposes employer abuses by serving as a clearinghouse and service center for all institutions and individuals working for and supporting stronger rights for workers.
